The Importance
of Image and Presentation

This article is dedicated to giving you tips to help you build your brand, whether you’re an entrepreneur, business owner or public figure.

If you’re not any of those, that’s okay too. Image and presentation are important, no matter who you are or what you do. The tips that I’m giving are useful for many facets of life; and you just never know where your journey will take you.

So how important is image and presentation really?

Well first, we need to understand what we mean when we say “image” or “presentation”.

Those are two distinct concepts. Why do I say this?

Because one is completely determined by you; and the other is determined by you, and other people.

You see, your presentation is all up to you. You decide how to present yourself to the world. If you’re a public figure, this can range from the clothes you wear, to your hairstyle, to the way you talk, and how you carry yourself.

If you’re a business owner, presentation is being professional at all times, and maintaining good business practices such as communication with your clients, and prompt delivery of your services.

Image is different. Your image is your public profile, and it’s a combination of both how you present yourself, and how others perceive you.

For example, if you’re a small business owner, you are in complete control of your logo. You decide how to present your products. If you have a storefront, you decide on your decor.

All of that is presentation, which is part of your image. But your image is also composed of how you are perceived by others.

For instance, word of mouth impacts your image; and it can be good or it can be bad.

If your customers are happy and satisfied with your service, they will give you good reviews via word of mouth, or even on digital platforms. This will in turn help to give you a positive image.

If your customers are displeased with your service, then the reviews will be negative – and so will your image.

It’s very important to understand the difference between presentation and image. One you have complete control over, and the other you have moderate control over. This is why it’s always important to go the extra mile to make sure that every customer or client has a wonderful experience.

It’s better to have customers that sing your praises, than ex-customers that wish for your downfall.

In this digital age that we’re in, we are constantly in presentation mode: We present ourselves through social media, through our websites, and through emails that we send out. We are constantly communicating via written words, whether we are corresponding with existing customers or trying to establish new clientele.

If you’re a public figure, you are constantly communicating with your following, or with the media.

Grammar and format play an extremely huge role in your presentation.

If you put out too many posts with grammatical errors, then be prepared to pack up your bat and ball and go home; because you’re never going to make it to the big leagues like that.

Think about it. If you regularly saw Target ads that had errors, would that inspire you to be a loyal customer?

Whether we know it or not, we all are attracted to professional, quality presentation. Even if you don’t consciously realize this, it’s subconsciously wired in you.

Books have been judged by their covers since the beginning of society; and it doesn’t look like it’s going to stop anytime soon.

You could have the best restaurant and serve the most elegant and delicious meals; but if the sign on your restaurant is filled with errors, and you have flyers or Facebook posts that have errors, you are not going to see the maximum growth of your business.

If you’re a public figure, people come to your social media pages because they recognize you as an authority in your field. If they have to struggle to read your posts because you use terrible grammar, then you’re going to lose your following.

Oh, you don’t misspell words? Well, that’s good. But what you probably don’t know is that if you’re using incorrect formatting techniques, that’s almost as bad as misspelled words.

Here’s an example of incorrect formatting (and bad grammar):

a SKILLed, full-time HAIRSTYLIST/BRAIDER makes an average of $300-$500 day!…Wow.. build someone else’s empire or build your own!? Are you ready to take your business AND lifestyle to the next level? Maybe start a successful career in the braiding industry !? With 20+ years experience, I’ve been able to do what I love, when I want and still make a living  , you can too! Invest in yourself or someone else such as your daughter’s future. It starts now !!

I was going to highlight the mistakes in red; but this whole post is a mistake.

There aren’t any misspelled words in the post. It’s just terrible formatting and grammar.

I’m sorry, but your business isn’t going to grow if you’re constantly putting out content that has terrible formatting and grammar.

Oh, I’m not saying that you won’t get SOME business. But let me ask you this: Are any of us really in business to just do “okay”? Or do we want to succeed and reach our goals?

Writing is a HUGE part of being in business. Most people don’t know that, but think about it: You have to write a synopsis of your business. You have to write a list of the services that you provide. You have to write ads. You have to write posts for your social media pages. You have to write content for your website.

So how important is it to have writing skills? Very important. And let’s be honest: Everyone isn’t a writer; and that’s okay.

Heck, I’ve watched bricklayers all my life, and even worked on construction sites as a labourer. But I know that I can’t lay bricks! And if I need some bricks laid, I’m going to hire somebody to do that for me.

You know whether or not you’re a skilled writer; and if you’re not, then stop trying to do it. It’s okay. Back away from the computer keyboard – SLOWLY. Put the pen down.

Your written content is your PRESENTATION; and if you’re using incorrect grammar and formatting on your website and social media, that’s just going to turn a lot of people off, and they aren’t even going to give you a chance.

This is all part of being professional. If you’re going to put yourself in the public eye, then put your best foot forward and make sure that your presentation is always on point. I promise that you’ll see business growth if you follow this simple rule.
